FAQ

The questions people are afraid to ask.

Ask them anyway. Here are honest answers to the ones we hear most.

I haven’t filed in a few years. Am I in trouble?

Most people in this situation are not in the kind of trouble they imagine. The IRS mainly wants the returns filed. We’ll figure out exactly which years are open, pull your income records so nothing is missed, and prepare them one at a time. If anything is owed, there are payment options, and we will explain every one of them. The hardest part is usually just reaching out.

I’ve never filed before. Where do I even start?

Right here. Book a time or send the form, and we will explain what filing is, what documents you need, and what to expect. Nobody is born knowing this. You are not behind — you are starting.

What should I bring to my appointment?

After we talk, you’ll get a short checklist made for your situation. In general: a photo ID, Social Security numbers for you and any dependents, your W-2s and 1099s, and last year’s return if you have it. Parents may need childcare provider info. Gig workers and business owners should bring income totals and a list of expenses (a rough list is fine — we’ll organize it together). Everything is uploaded through the secure client portal, never by text or regular email.

Do I have to come in person?

No. We serve clients in person locally in Alabama and virtually anywhere in the country. Documents can be shared through a secure upload link, and we can meet by phone or video.

Can you promise me the biggest refund?

No one can honestly promise that, and we won’t. What we do promise is that we will help you claim every credit and deduction you legally qualify for, explain each one, and make sure your return is accurate. A correct return is what protects you.

I drive for Uber / DoorDash. Do I really need to file?

If you earned income from gig work, yes — even if you didn’t receive a form. The good news is that mileage and other expenses can lower what you owe, and we will show you how to track them so next year is easier.

I just started a small business. What do I need to know?

Keep your business money separate from personal money, save your receipts, and set a little aside for taxes as you go. Bring us what you have and we will get your books in order, prepare your Schedule C, and explain estimated payments so nothing surprises you.

How much does it cost?

It depends on what your return involves, and we would rather look at your situation than quote a number that turns out to be wrong. Reach out, tell us a little about your year, and we will give you a clear, honest quote before any work starts.

Is my information kept private?

Yes. Your documents and your story stay between us. We use secure tools for sharing files and never share your information with anyone outside of preparing your return.

I got a letter from the IRS. What do I do?

First, don’t panic, and don’t ignore it. Take a photo of it and send it to us. Many letters are simple to resolve, and we will explain what it means and what to do next.
